The Powers is a creative collaboration between Emily Pelstring, Katherine Kline and Jessica Mensch. Our work spans experimental electronic music, performance, video, episodic livestream television, and installation. Our projects are research-oriented, world-making efforts in which we build an alternate cosmology by reclaiming and rewriting myths and archetypes handed down to us by white mainstream North American patriarchal culture. We often work with characters from antiquity (Medusa, Sirens, Gorgons, Fates) and popular quasi-religious iconographies (Santa, Easter Bunny, Witches). Our recent work includes our episodic livestream collaboration with 20-plus artists, Sistership TV (2018-2020), and our full-length LP, Tentacles (2023, put out on Personal Records from Montreal, QC. Our DIY aesthetic and self-determined production methodology are intentional, political aspects of our practice that draw on a tradition of queer-feminist performance art that undermines commercial aesthetic values.
